CHL graduates competing for Canadian University Championships

Toronto - The partnership between the Canadian Hockey League and Canadian Interuniversity Sport continues this week with 112 CHL graduates participating in the Telus University Cup championship. The tournament, which is being held in Edmonton, Alberta for the second straight year, opens on Thursday.

Over 500 Canadian Hockey League graduates played university hockey this year on scholarships from their CHL club.

"Our partnership with Canadian University hockey is a key component to the development of our young student athletes as they make the transition from the Canadian Hockey League into the CIS," said CHL President David Branch. "It is a tribute to the dedication of these young men both at the rink and in the classroom that they have been able to successfully combine their hockey and academic careers. We are very proud of these young men who have reached the pinnacle of success at the University Cup and wish them good luck throughout the tournament."

Virtually every player from the defending champion University of Alberta Golden Bears graduated from the CHL. The Golden Bears, who are looking for their unprecedented 12th University Cup, are the top seed heading into the tournament.

Preliminary round and semi-final games will be played at Clare Drake Arena, home of the Golden Bears with the championship final at Rexall Place on March 26. Last year, more than 11,000 fans attended the championship game between Alberta and Saskatchewan at Rexall Place.
